ZECON Engineering Bhd is eyeing construction related projects in the Middle East, said chairman Datuk Dr Hatta Solhi.

Hatta said company officials had made several trips to the Middle East and found good potential there for Zecon to expand its business, especially in foundation engineering and construction.

“Opportunities are abundant in construction related activities especially in the oil-rich states which are in the early stages of construction boom. We are ever-ready to tap these opportunities,” he said after Zecon's AGM in Kuching yesterday.

However, Hatta ruled out undertaking projects in Saudi Arabia or Iraq.

He said Zecon and NS Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd had started a joint-venture project to carry out emergency work for the construction of the RM64mil Sungai Muar raw water transfer project for completion in nine months.

Hatta said Zecon was awaiting approval from the Securities Commission (SC) for its proposed acquisition of Zalpoint Corp Sdn Bhd, which is the concessionaire for the Tun Salahuddin Bridge across Sarawak River in Kuching.

Hatta said wholly-owned subsidiary Zecon Properties Sdn Bhd was also waiting SC approval for its proposed acquisition of three firms - Zalpoint Petra Jaya Sdn Bhd, Zalpoint Demak Jaya Sdn Bhd and Zalpoint Tanah Putih Sdn Bhd – which have a total landbank of 836ha with approved development plans.
