THE extended yard at the back of K. Perumal’s house in Sungai Petani is a hive of activity from nine in the morning until six in the evening every day. The place is a mini-factory stocked with bags of flour and sugar, and equipped with large woks and small machines that are tools of the trade for his family-run confectionery and titbits business.
It is a thriving enterprise that produces, packages and markets traditional Indian delicacies such as muruku, ommapoddi (mixture), ribbon, pagoda, ghee orundei and almond ladoo, and the workers comprise family members and relatives.
