CANBERRA: Australia's conservative government sidestepped questions about a possible early election yesterday as it embarked on a media blitz to sell its 2004/05 budget which delivers tax cuts and more money for young families.

Treasurer Peter Costello used bumper company tax receipts in his ninth budget to cut income taxes by A$14.7bil (US$10.2bil) over four years and boost family assistance by A$19.2bil over five years, while keeping a A$2.4bil surplus.
