Howard unveils multi-billion dollar R&D package

SYDNEY: Australian Prime Minister John Howard unveiled a A$5.3bil (US$3.86bil) package to boost scientific research and innovation last Thursday, the latest project in a pre-election spending spree by his conservative government.

The five-year funding plan puts a major emphasis on commercialising Australian innovations and controversially cuts off aid to 19 research centres the government says has failed in this area – notably a key program designed to track threats to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
