l PARIS: French bank BNP Paribas yesterday posted a 31% rise in first-quarter profit, beating forecasts, on growth in money management results, capital gains, and fewer loan loss provisions. 

The Paris-based bank, the euro-zone’s largest by market value, earned 1.263 billion euros (US$1.53bil) in the first three months of the year versus 962 million euros in the year-ago first quarter. – Reuters 

l NEW YORK: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd overtook archrival LG Philips in the first quarter as the world's top maker of high-resolution computer monitors, according to industry data, and Samsung is set to keep its lead. 

Electronic display market research firm DisplaySearch of Austin, Texas said recent data showed Samsung, the top maker of notebook computer displays, had overtaken LG Philips in sales of desktop computer monitors, where LG Philips has long been the leader. – Reuters 

l FRANKFURT:DaimlerChrysler AG chief executive Juergen Schrempp denied the carmaker's Asian strategy was in tatters following the decision to cease giving support to Mitsubishi Motors, a newspaper reported on Wednesday. 

In an interview with the Stuttgarter Zeitung to published yesterday, Schrempp said the strategy was “on the right path” and reaffirmed his goal of generating a quarter of the group's revenues in Asia in the mid-term. – Reuters
