HONG KONG: SABMiller Plc, the world’s second- biggest brewer, made a HK$3.04bil (US$391mil) unsolicited takeover offer for Harbin Brewery Group Ltd., taking on Anheuser- Busch Cos. in what may be the first battle by overseas investors for a Chinese company.
SABMiller said it’s offering HK$4.30 for the 70.6% of Harbin Brewery that it doesn’t own, which includes a 29% stake Anheuser-Busch, the world’s biggest brewer, bought this week. Harbin shares surged as much as 49% to HK$4.80, suggesting investors are betting Anheuser-Busch will top the bid.
