Loss-making contract microchip maker Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd said yesterday it may invest US$700mil to US$800mil to help its latest and most advanced factory break even in 2005.
The investment is needed to raise capacity at the company's sixth wafer fabrication plant, called Fab 7, to a level where it can cover its fixed operating costs.
