ATLAS Defence Technology Sdn Bhd is aiming to become one of the major service providers of marine technology in South-East Asia.

The 70:30 joint venture between Penang Shipbuilding and Construction Sdn Bhd (PSC) and German company Atlas Elektronik GmbH currently provides such services to the Royal Malaysian Navy and to national oil company Petronas.

It is also involved in the building of petro-vessels for the navy.

“We plan to train our engineers in advanced marine technology in Germany to enable them to cope with the changes in this industry,” managing director S.S.T. Wafa told a media briefing in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Atlas currently has 26 engineers trained in either Germany or Australia.

Wafa said the company was the first joint venture between Atlas Elektronik and a South-East Asian company, and thus the experience and technology gained since its establishment in 1998 would position it strategically in the marine industry for the region.

He said the company recorded a turnover of RM13mil last year and had been profitable. It has invested RM30mil since 1998 in training its engineers and infrastructure. – Bernama
