Strategic alliances to boost NasionCom prepaid card sales

Next generation telecommunications provider NasionCom Sdn Bhd is confident its newly-formed strategic alliances, which will expand its channel distribution nationwide, to cause a big impact on the local Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) market.  

Over the next three months, it expected sales of its NasionCall Home prepaid cards to grow by at least 50% quarter-on-quarter, said executive vice-chairman Datuk Chee Kok Wing.  

The company yesterday sealed strategic alliances with five re- nowned corporations – Visa In- ternational (Asia Pacific) Ltd; Convenience Shopping Sdn Bhd, the owner and operator of the 7-Eleven store franchise in Malaysia; Alliance Bank Malaysia Bhd; SiS Distribution Sdn Bhd; and Bank Simpanan Nasional Bhd (BSN) – to jointly market NasionCall Home prepaid cards.  

“We introduced the prepaid cards more than 10 months ago but our distribution coverage had been limited to about 60 retailers, mostly in the Klang Valley. With these partnerships, NasionCall Home will be available nationwide,” Chee said. 

“And because these companies are known in the industry, it is also an endorsement of the quality of our service. This is a boost to our credibility among consumers.”  

Convenience Shopping general manager Quah Jin Ho said all the 282 7-Eleven outlets nationwide had started selling the NasionCall Home service via e-pay terminals.  

BSN general manager and chief executive officer Abu Huraira Abu Yazid said the bank would initially distribute the cards in 30 branches in the Klang Valley and depending on the response it would subsequently expand the service to the rest of its 400 branches nationwide. 

SiS Distribution, which has over 2,000 resellers and distributors throughout Malaysia, will initially sell the cards bundled with its other products in the Klang Valley. 

“We hope to expand (the sales of the card) to the rest of the country by the third quarter next year,” managing director Frank Teh said. 

Jointly with Visa International, NasionCom is making an unprecedented offer to the two million Visa credit card holders whereby from now till the end of February, NasionCom will be offering a special rate of 10 sen/min for all national calls and to 10 popular destinations. They are Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Britain and the United States.  

All Visa card-issuing banks will be participating in the promotion. Alliance Bank will be the official clearing bank for the promotion. 

“If we have just 10% of the two million Visa cardholders responding to the offer and each buying RM50 value, we would have made RM10mil,” Chee said.
