SHANGHAI: A stop at the Beijing Road toy shop was a step back in time. In dusty glass cases and stacks of boxes sat a treasure trove of Matchbox race cars, tanks and trucks classics made in Shanghai and sold for just 7 yuan (80 US cents) apiece.
For more than a decade, shopkeeper Liu has peddled Matchbox die-cast vehicles to toy stores and the odd retail customer. Soon, though, he'll be out of a job a casualty of the relatively high cost of producing toys in Shanghai.
