CANBERRA: China’s biggest offshore oil and gas producer CNOOC will buy a stake in the Gorgon gas field off the coast of north-western Australia as part of an A$30bil deal, the Western Australian state government and project operator ChevronTexaco said yesterday.

The Beijing-controlled company would buy a 12.5% equity stake in the Gorgon development and take between 80 million and 100 million tonnes of gas over 25 years, the Western Australian government said.
