PROMOTION is still an important part of doing business regardless of size.

This is the message International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz has for local companies, including small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs).

Opening the Opportunities in manufacturing, trade and manufacturing related services southern region investment seminar, Rafidah lamented that whenever there were trade expositions overseas, only a handful of Malaysian companies took part.

She said with just few participants, Malaysia would not make an impact compared with countries with a large turnout and even their own pavilions.

Rafidah said local companies might be complacent and did not see a need to move or expand their operations or products beyond Malaysian shores. Even some KLSE-listed companies also have this mentality.

Rafidah said only by taking part in trade missions or expositions, will local companies have a better chance to introduce their products and services to the world.

She said foreign-owned companies exporting their products from Malaysia could also join the overseas trade missions organised by Miti but many were not aware of it.
