HONG KONG: Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, the conglomerate controlled by Asia's richest businessman, Li Ka-shing, reported yesterday a rise in first-half earnings, thanks to surging traffic at its Chinese container ports and the purchase last year of a European retail chain.
The company, whose shares have been burdened by deep scepticism toward its US$16.7bil bet on third-generation mobile telecoms, posted net profit of HK$6.07bil for the six months ended June 30, compared with HK$5.95bil a year earlier, lagging analyst forecasts.
