The Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) is proposing to the Works Ministry to have a national competency standard as a benchmark for undertaking government projects involving project management consultants.

Works Ministry Parliamentary Secretary Datuk Yong Khoon Seng said that CIDB was awaiting approval from the ministry on the document, which was prepared with the co-operation of various parties in the construction industry.

“Project management is a new field of knowledge in the country and it is important to have a benchmark as anyone can claim to have the competency to provide project management services,” he said after opening a project management seminar for government agencies in Kuching yesterday.

Yong said CIDB was in the process of framing a system of benchmarking for project management consultants and managers as well as a uniform teaching and training module.

He said Malaysians were now confident with CIDB’s professionalism and efficiency, which was being recognised overseas with joint-venture projects being undertaken in countries like India and Sri Lanka. – Bernama
