WASHINGTON: Fighting poverty is widely seen as the key to world peace and stability, a World Bank poll of 2,600 opinion leaders in 48 countries found, yet most respondents saw wealth gaps growing within and between their countries.
Most of those surveyed – senior figures from government, media, civil society, academia, companies and labour unions – expressed doubt that the world will meet the UN Millennium Development Goal of halving global poverty by 2015.
