COB Technology has signed a US$20mil 2-year agreement with PerkinElmer Instruments of the US for the contract manufacture of life and analytical sciences instruments – believed to be a 1st in the Asia Pacific.

The equipment, such as atomic absorption spectrometer, mercury detector, auto sampler and cooling tower, would be exported to the US, Europe and Japan, Cob Technology chief executive officer Rodger Ng said.

Cob Technology would manufacture the instruments at its plant in Sungai Petani in Kedah using PerkinElmer's world-standard technology, he said.

Ng also said that COB Technology would be embarking on 4 othe joint-ventures with 2 American-based and 2 British-based companies between June and September.

“Following the joint ventures, our Sungai Petani plant will be manufacturing medical, avionics and automotive products.

“However, we won't be increasing our workforce. We will turn our normal operators into value-added manufacturing specialists,” he said.

According to Ng, COB Technology also plans to be listed on the KLSE main board in 12 to 18 months.
