SEOUL: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd registered a worse-than-expected drop of 41% in first-quarter profit yesterday because of a slump in memory chip prices, but its shares rose on hopes for an industry rebound.
Weak demand for personal computers (PCs) caused by the global economic slowdown had forced Samsung, the world’s top memory chipmaker, to cut contract chip prices almost every two weeks during the quarter to push products out the door.
