Developing economies of Asia-Pacific notched up real growth of two percentage points last year despite geopolitical uncertainties, but they can expect to face more challenging times this year with the unavoidable effects of the Iraq war and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) impacting economic activities.

During a press launch of the United Nation's (UN) Economic and social survey of Asia and the Pacific 2003 in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research deputy director Dr Mohd Haflah Piei said the economic fallout from the Iraq war on the global economy aside, SARS would also cast a pall on “affected” countries such as Malaysia.
