Good business in making road transport hardware

MANUFACTURING and fabrication of road transport hardware is an evergreen business, said SCOMI GROUP BHD president and chief executive officer Shah Hakim Zain.

“This business is a recurring one and we expect an average of RM1.5mil in sales per month this year,” he told StarBiz in an interview yesterday.

Hakim said the group's transport engineering division in Subang Jaya under Scomi Sdn Bhd acquired chassis from Volvo or Mercedes-Benz and built vehicles to its customers' specifications as this was more cost-effective than importing the whole vehicle. As at Dec 31, 2002, the transport engineering division contributes about 31% of the group's revenue, second only to the oil and gas division at 68%

Scomi Sdn Bhd, which started operations in 1990, manufactures and fabricates a wide range of quality road transport hardware under the brand name KING's.

According to Hakim, the company builds road trailers and tankers, garbage compactors, ambulances and even special applications vehicles for the military and fire department.

“Our flagship product is the airport ground handling equipment, for example, aircraft re-fuellers and passenger stairs. We have provided such equipment to airports in the country, Singapore and Taipei,” he said, adding that the airport re-fuelling equipment cost about RM1mil to RM1.5mil each.

He said the company had a very good design team that emphasised on innovation creativity. Scomi's own design team uses advanced 3-D design software and also auto computer-aided design software to handle technical drawings for training, proposals, approval submission, production and modification work.

To complement its main business activity of manufacturing and fabrication of road transport hardware, Scomi also provides related engineering services and distribution of transportation related equipment. The company provides services such as consultation, design, problem solving, parts repairs and training in the specialised transportation engineering field.

Hakim said the company was flexible in customising products and imposed no minimum size of order, catering to large and small orders.

The company's customers include Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, airport operators and military contractors. The company also exports to countries like Singapore, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand and Brunei.
