NEW YORK: News Corp Ltd has clinched a deal to take control of DirecTV for US$6.6bil in cash and stock, giving media mogul Rupert Murdoch his long-sought entry to the US satellite television market.
The acquisition comes almost two decades after Murdoch first tried to enter the US satellite TV business and rounds out his effort to build a diversified US entertainment conglomerate. DirecTV’s 11.3 million US subscribers, the most in the country, complement News Corp’s European, Asian and Latin American satellite services.
