A LEADER who has a hectic life can be a bad leader. It means he would be susceptible to hare-brained schemes which are not well thought through. The more complicated an issue, is, the more there has to be serious thinking.
Ponder and deliberate before deciding. He who conquers knows the art of deviation. Such is the art of manoeuvres. Sun Tzu 7:21-22
The tough industrious efforts must be paralleled by serious tough thinking. There cannot be lazy half-hearted measures, both in action and thinking.
There are many important aspects which must not be overlooked. The mind needs to think very hard.
The mouth, not the brain, is the most active organ in the lazy person. To overcome laziness the brain must win over the mouth. Very talkative people tend to be hare-brained.
Especially those who talk like a train, giving no chance for others to say a word. They are more likely to ceaselessly interrupt you. These people are not thinking but shooting.
Instead of remaining constantly alerted to the limitations of his mental faculties, man tends to relax his guard and, for the sake of convenience, seems quite willing to settle for the false or erroneous. (Ludwig 1965 p. 203).
One way to tilt the balance in favour of the brain is to go away to a quiet isolated place. The I Ching emphasises that when a leader wants to think up a formidable effective plan he must withdraw from his frequent meetings with the people and retire into the inner courts.
In such an environment there would be no one to talk to. Then the mouth has nothing to say and just have has to stay close shut. In such an environment, the brain is supreme and can do its thinking.
As there would be less energy lost through talking, the energy could go to stimulate the brain.
People are easily distracted. Going to a quiet place also means there would be fewer less distractions, allowing the mind to think more thoroughly.
This effect could also be achieved obtained by going to the library where it is forbidden to talk.
However, the library could suffer from oxygen deficiency, which would dull thinking.
A quite quiet solitude isolated in the outdoors is probably better.
Which was why the ancients liked to depict wise men retiring to the mountains to meditate - the fresh air is good for the brains! People should avoid being excited by trivial things:Do not intercept an enemy whose banners are in perfect order or whose troops are arrayed in an impressive formation.
This is control of circumstances. It is a military axiom not to advance against the enemy who occupies higher ground; do not oppose him if he comes downhill.
Do not pursue an enemy who pretends to flee. Do not attack troops whose spirit is keen. Do not swallow baits offered by the enemy. Avoid intercepting troops on the home march. When surrounding an enemy, leave an escape route. Do not press a foe to desperation. This is the way of warfare. Sun Tzu 7:32-36.
The most important thing is that the mind must be focused on the main problem. Like the student studying for the examinations, partying and fun must be put aside for the time being.
While the distractions and temptations may be appealing, one must exercise discipline to ignore them for the time being.
It also helps if the distractions are reduced or kept away.
Hence, some corporations recognise the importance of the retreat for high level planning among top executives. A place away from the office and its potentially disturbing calls.
A nice location with suitable board and lodging.
Properly documented data dis¬tributed beforehand for mulling before and during the recesses between meetings.
Most important, getting the right knowledgeable and dedicated people to be at the planning.
Here are the highlights about lazy thinking:Why do people tell the lies?
Cannot be bothered to find out Factors which make a person susceptible to the lies. Laziness, superficiality How to discern the signs of a lie.
Lack of knowledge of terrain or market situation, no adequate preparationHow to survive the lies. Put in serious industrious effort.
