Foreign direct investment sharply higher at RM12bil

PORTFOLIO investment recorded a higher net outflow of RM6.7bil in 2002 (2001: -RM2.5bil). In the first quarter, portfolio investment recorded a net inflow of RM2.9bil (1Q 2001: -RM2.5bil); the subsequent three quarters, however, registered net outflows in line with the prolonged weakening of the global stock market amidst growing economic uncertainties and heightened geopolitical risks. 

Net foreign direct investment (FDI) jumped substantially to RM12bil (2001: RM2.1bil) or 3.6% of the gross national product (GNP), and gross inflows of FDI improved to RM22.4bil (2001: RM18.8bil).
