FALLING stock markets, a legacy of over-investment in equities and underwriting practices are taking a toll on many of the giant insurance companies in Europe. For local players, the message coming from the far reaches is clear – change or run the risk of losing out. 

The dynamics of local insurance business generally hinge on two traditionally vital sources of revenue, namely gross premiums collected from policy buyers and returns from insurance funds placed in such financial instruments like equities, bonds, deposits and properties.
