TOKYO (AP) - Japan's trade surplus fell 42.8 percent from the year earlier in January, its first contraction in 11 months, as exports lost steam under a strengthening yen, the Finance Ministry announced Monday.
The country's merchandise trade surplus - the measure of all goods exported minus those imported - decreased to 104.99 billion yen (US$884.05 million), it said.
