MAA CEO's formula for productivity

LISTENING to Ramlan Abdul Rashid, one would think that he is a motivational speaker.

He is not one but as chief executive officer and executive director of Malaysian Assurance Alliance Bhd (MAA), Ramlan is gung-ho about productivity and efficiency.

Nothing unusual in this, except that the mathematics graduate who also holds a Masters' degree in actuarial science from Ball State University, Indiana, has actually applied a mathematics-styled formula to boost staff morale.

The formula is (P+D-N) x Action = FG, where P stands for Purpose, D: Desire, N: Non-essentials, A: Action and FG is Faster Growth.

“When you add purpose and desire, minus non-essentials like gossip and negativity, then multiply with action, the result is faster growth,” he explained in an interview.

Asked if he was willing to share this formula with the public, he said: “If they find it useful, they will use this formula to improve themselves. No harm sharing these things because help moves in a circle.”

Speaking to his agents recently, he inspired them by saying, “At MAA, we create our own opportunities every day. We create winning teams and we make winning our number one goal every day.”

“Nobody can claim that he got to the top because he was lucky. You get what you deserve and what you strive for. Remember that all of you are born to win. Each one of us has our own strengths. Your strength is the one thing that will give you confidence in what you want to achieve.

“Productivity means doing things in a better more efficient and productive way to bring effective results,” he said.

Recalling the day he started work with MAA 17 years ago as an actuarial executive, before moving up the ranks to his current position, Ramlan said: “From day one, I was determined for MAA to rise to the number one position.”

By setting high goals and being committed to success, MAA would continue to be in the forefront of the industry, he added.
