WESTPORT has created a 90-second television commercial that celebrates Malaysia's uniqueness by fusing traditional musical styles and instrumentations of the three main ethnic groups.
The commercial, titled Musical Fusion, features a multicultural symphony that symbolically captures our nations ability to forge unity, camaraderie and harmony from its multi-ethnic citizenry, it said in a statement.
Music is also used in a manner that envisions the vistas that open before us when we come together in all our diversity. So three distinct musical styles and instrumentations of Malay, Chinese and Indian were fused together to create a melody that is typically Malaysian.
Westport said the melody was an original composition of Betarecs Sdn Bhd, under the guidance of Freddie Fernandez, a prominent figure in Malaysia's music scene.
It was a real challenge to merge the different ethnic instrumentations that were used for the composition but the end-result, I must admit, more than made up for it, Fernandez said.
The commercial was produced by Lensa Sdn Bhd and directed by Ahmad Sean Sulong and Ridzuan Aziz. The large number of musicians from the three ethnic groups really worked well together. The camaraderie, friendliness and openness they showed to one another were evident throughout the whole shoot, said Ahmad Sean.
The talent these musicians have is amazing, added Ridzuan. Even during breaks, a seruling player would start off with a few notes of a melody, then spontaneously the other ethnic musical groups would join in, all in perfect synchronisation and harmony. What took place is really a glowing testament to Westports vision on what it wanted to achieve with this commercial.
The commercial was aired during the year-end period over selected Astro channels as well as on certain local free-to-air television stations.
