READING Sateras Resources (M) Bhd chairman's annual statements through the early 1990s, one could be forgiven for thinking this company was an emerging Third World General Electric. 

After all, this was the company, originally a synthetic resin maker, which in 1992 considered a stake in an insurance company; by 1994 it was building hotels and a World Trade Centre in China; and the following year, signing agreements to manufacture cars there.
