Maybank posts record profit, cautious on external uncertainties

KUALA LUMPUR: The country’s largest lender Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank), which saw for the first time ever its net profit breach the RM7bil level, remains “cautiously optimistic” moving forward owing mostly to the external environment.

Malaysia needs structural reforms says global investor

KUALA LUMPUR: Penang-born Datuk Seri Cheah Cheng Hye (pic) who left Malaysia decades ago counts the middle-income trap, brain drain and high public service spending as current risks to the country.

Cheah(pic) thinks the local stock market could go up by between 5% to 10% this year while the ringgit, which has mostly been on an uptrend in recent times, is “still down quite a lot”, against the US dollar.

Board needed for new-economy firms

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia should create a new board on its stock exchange specially for new-economy companies in order to “catch up” with countries like Hong Kong and Singapore, says a prominent fund manager.

“My argument is that it is unlikely that tech entrepreneurs or even those in advanced biological sciences would now list in Malaysia (following Hong Kong and Singapore’s moves) ...,” Cheah, a former financial journalist who now co-manages over US$16bil in global funds, told StarBiz in an exclusive interview.
