Foreign insurers get more time to lower shareholdings

KUALA LUMPUR: All foreign insurers operating in Malaysia have about two more months to submit their plans on paring down their shareholdings in their local units.

In February last year, Bloomberg reported that the Employees Provident Fund was in talks to buy a stake in the Malaysian unit of Singapore’s Great Eastern Holdings Ltd.  The report also mentioned that Prudential and Tokio Marine were also in discussions with bankers

Economy grows at 4.7% in Q4 of 2018, above forecast

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's economy expanded at 4.7% in the fourth quarter of 2018 (Q4 2018), which was above Bloomberg's survey of a 4.5% growth, after the moderation in the two consecutive quarters.

Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus said: "In 2019, the Malaysian economy is likely to remain on a steady growth path."

Hartalega's 9-months profit below expectatiions

PETALING JAYA: Glovemaker Hartalega Holdings Bhd’s net profit in the first nine months ended Dec 31, 2018 (9M19) came in below consensus expectations, despite having increased by 13% year-on-year (y-o-y).

“Anecdotal evidence suggests that shorter delivery lead time does indicate that strong demand is tapering off and players ramping up production could result in further average selling price (ASP) pressure.  “From our channel checks, we gather that competition in the nitrile gloves segment has intensified, leading to pressures on the ASP,” it said in a note yesterday

“There was no major pushback from investors on our FBM KLCI target of 1,638 points for end 2019, which is more conservative compared with some of our peers due to concerns over potential earnings disappointments and external risks,” CIMB Research said.
