MANILA: The Angeles City Police Office (ACPO) said on (May 29) that the individual fabricated a story alleging he survived the tragedy after supposedly buying beer near the area when the structure collapsed, a narrative that initially gained attention online.
He further claimed to have received financial assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) last Wednesday. Suspicion of his story grew after he allegedly attempted to seek additional aid, prompting verification of his identity and background.
Further investigation showed that the man, who is not a resident of Angeles City, was neither a survivor nor connected to any of the victims of the collapse. He later admitted to fabricating the entire story.
Angeles City Mayor Carmelo Lazatin II condemned the act, saying it was an attempt to exploit a tragedy that has already left multiple families grieving.
“This is a very painful incident that has deeply affected many families. A lot of people have suffered and continue to suffer because of this tragedy. What we need right now is empathy, honesty, and understanding — not exploitation,” Lazatin said.
The city government urged the public and media to remain vigilant against misinformation and to verify claims before sharing them on social media, especially as recovery and investigation efforts continue at the disaster site.
Authorities said the investigation into the building collapse remains ongoing as search, rescue, and retrieval operations continue. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
