Two foreign nationals jailed, caned for overstaying in Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Immigration and National Registration Department (JIPK) under the Ministry of Home Affairs has reported two recent prosecutions under Chapter 15(1) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 17, for overstaying after their immigration passes had expired.

In the first case, Ferose Ali Abdul Muthalif, a 43-year-old Indian national, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane after pleading guilty. The sentence came into effect on Feb 12.

In the second case, Md Sulaiman Hossain, a 34-year-old Bangladeshi national, received five months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane following his guilty plea. His sentence became effective on Feb 15.

The department emphasised the importance of public cooperation in reporting immigration offenders and encouraged members of the public to contact the JIPK Hotline at 8734888/ 8753888 (Bandar Seri Begawan) or 8984111 (Kuala Belait) with relevant information. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
