HANOI/OSAKA (VNExpress): A 32-year-old Vietnamese woman in Japan's Osaka Prefecture died after collapsing during a solo climb on Mount Ryozen in Shiga Prefecture.

A rescue helicopter discovered the woman lying motionless near the mountain’s summit, located along the border between Maibara City and Taga Town, at approximately 6:50am on Feb 20, Japanese news site Chunichi reported.

The victim was identified as Huynh Thi Ngoc Thuy, a Vietnamese national working as a senior care worker in Yao City, Osaka Prefecture.

She was found in cardiopulmonary arrest and transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead about three hours later.

According to Hikone Police Station, Thuy began climbing alone at around 1 p.m. on Feb 19.

At about 10 p.m. the same day, she contacted police requesting rescue, saying she was unable to descend the mountain. Police and firefighters immediately launched a search operation, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Authorities reported no visible traumatic injuries.

Although Thuy had mountaineering equipment, her clothing was not adequate for the severe nighttime cold and snowy conditions.

Mount Ryozen, which rises to nearly 1,100 meters, experiences sub-zero temperatures at night and is often snow-covered during winter.

Japanese authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. -- VNExpress
