VIENTIANE: Laos' Ministry of Public Security handled a total of 6,996 criminal cases in 2025, of which 6,415 cases were resolved, mostly in relation to drug dealing.

The Lao Ministry of Public Security held a meeting in the Lao capital Vientiane from Monday to Tuesday to review its achievements in 2025 and outline its action plan for 2026, according to the ministry's report on Thursday (Feb 19).

Over the past year, special emphasis was placed on combating drug-related crimes and preventing social unrest, the report said, adding that among the 6,996 criminal cases handled in 2025, 6,415 were resolved and 9,844 suspects were arrested.

Most cases were drug-related, with 3,660 drug trafficking cases and the arrest of 5,643 suspects, including 322 foreign nationals. A total of 4,089 cases were successfully prosecuted.

Looking ahead, the ministry will focus on four key priorities, including maintaining national peace and stability, strengthening and modernising the security forces, improving the welfare of security personnel, and enhancing international cooperation, the report said.

Leaders at all levels have been instructed to turn these priorities into practical action plans tailored to local conditions to ensure their effective implementation nationwide, it added. - Xinhua
