Sri Lanka's anti-graft body arrests 84 in 2025 nationwide bribery raids

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption said Tuesday (Jan 27) that 84 individuals were arrested in 2025 during a series of raids across the country.

The commission said the arrests were made during 130 islandwide raids last year.

According to the commission's latest data, police officers accounted for the largest share of those detained, with 30 members of the Sri Lanka Police taken into custody. Police personnel also represented the majority of arrests recorded in 2024, the data show.

In addition, 56 suspects were arrested following formal investigations based on public complaints. The anti-graft body said those detained through investigations include several high-ranking officials, such as former ministers, ministry secretaries and heads of government departments.

The commission said it would continue stepped-up enforcement actions as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability and curb corruption in the public sector. - Xinhua
