5.7-magnitude quake hits waters near Philippines, says GFZ


BEIJING (Xinhua): An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 jolted waters near the Philippines at 1753 GMT on Sunday, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 8.32 degrees north latitude and 127.57 degrees east longitude.

A moderate earthquake measuring magnitude 5.0 struck Mindanao, Philippines on Friday (Dec 19).

The department noted that several earthquakes have recently been recorded in various areas of the Philippines, including regions near Tagum City and the southern part of the country, highlighting the seismic activity in the area.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise the public to stay alert to any updates regarding aftershocks or related seismic events. 

It was reported that there was no tsunami threat as of Monday afternoon.
