Thailand to bid to extend hosting of MotoGP race, government official says


BANGKOK, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Thailand will bid to extend its hosting of a MotoGP motorcycle race from 2027 and 2031 after the end of its current contract next year, a government official said on Tuesday.

The cabinet approved a budget limit of 3.9 billion baht (US$119 million) for organising the race over the five-year period, government spokesman Airin Phanrit told reporters.

Thailand, a major regional tourism destination, has hosted a MotoGP race since 2018. ($1 = 32.7500 baht) and is considered one of the best circuits in the motorcycling season.

The race is hosted at Chang International Circuit near Buriram in Buriram province.

In 2020 and 2021, the race was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The event takes place at the Buriram International Circuit until at least 2026.

On Aug 21, 2024, it was announced that the Thailand Grand Prix will be the first round of the 2025 and 2026 seasons. - Reuters
