Police arrest the driver of bus that went up in flames, killing 20 in India

NEW DELHI (Xinhua): The driver of the double-decker sleeper bus that went up in flames killing 20 and injuring many others in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh was arrested.

Police said Sunday the accused was found to have secured his heavy vehicle driving licence using forged credentials.

The investigators have found that the driver, who studied only up to Class 5, managed to get a heavy vehicle driving licence with a fake Class 10 certificate.

According to India's licensing rules, anyone driving a transport vehicle needs to have studied at least up to Class 8.

The bus carrying 42 passengers caught fire on early Friday after colliding with a motorcycle on the road near Chinna Tekur village in Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh.

The ill-fated bus ran over a two-wheeler, dragged the motorbike underneath, and subsequently caused its fuel tank to burst and ignite a massive fire, engulfing the entire vehicle.

Police said the two people on the bike involved in the accident were drunk. - Xinhua
