Filipinos rescued in northern Japan alps, one dies

GIFU, Japan: Two Filipinos were rescued on Sunday (Oct 12) on Mount Okuhotakadake, which straddles Nagano and Gifu prefectures in the Northern Japan Alps, but one later died, police said, Kyodo News Agency reported.

According to police, the two men, aged 53 and 48, were part of a seven-member group that climbed the 3,190-metre peak, which shares the title of Japan’s third tallest. They became stranded while descending.

Police launched a search on Saturday evening after receiving an emergency call from a staff member of a mountain lodge near the summit, who said a Philippine woman had reported three members of her group missing.

The three were eventually found about 170m from the lodge around 5.20am on Sunday.

The 53-year-old man, who was in serious condition, was later confirmed dead, while the 48-year-old man is believed to be suffering from hypothermia. The third person, a woman, descended on her own, police said. - Bernama-Kyodo
