BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Among the thousands who attended the Get-Together Ceremony with Citizens and Residents of Brunei-Muara District on Sunday (Oct 12) were expatriates living in the country as well as alumni of the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP) who coincidentally found themselves in Brunei for a reunion event.
Both groups shared their excitement and admiration for Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.
Representing CfBT Education Services Brunei, United Kingdom (UK) – born professional Dr Louise Pagden described her first experience attending the ceremony as “a real privilege”.
She shared, “In the UK, dignitaries and leaders rarely interact with the public at this level.
To meet His Majesty so personally was a very positive and surprising experience.” Dr Pagden also said, “It’s joyous, vibrant, and brings people together. Experiencing Brunei’s heritage through music, dance, and traditions was truly special. His Majesty is approachable, genuinely interested in his people, and deeply committed to their welfare.”
Meanwhile, SSEAYP alumni Dr Radhakrishnan Nagarajan from Singapore of the 1986 batch, visiting Brunei for their 39th reunion, also expressed his delight at participating in the celebrations.
He said, “This is my first time attending a royal celebration here. It’s a coincidence that our reunion falls during His Majesty’s birthday celebrations, and we are very fortunate to meet His Majesty.
“Brunei is very different now, and it’s refreshing to see the new Brunei while experiencing the same warm hospitality as before.”
SSEAYP alumna and psychology lecturer from the Philippines Melissa Reyes described the occasion as “a very big and festive celebration” and a testament to the Sultan's positive social impact.
“Seeing so many organisations come together to honour His Majesty shows how much he is loved and respected. It’s a privilege to be part of this community,” she said. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
