TOKYO: The photogenic son of a former premier, a hardline nationalist hoping to become Japan's first woman prime minister and an experienced, Beatles-loving moderate are leading the race to take the country's highest political post.

AFP gives a rundown of the three Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lawmakers, among a field of five, with the best shot at claiming the ruling party's leadership crown on Saturday (Oct 4) and likely becoming prime minister.
