Two earthquakes jolt Philippines' Eastern, Northern Samar towns


MANILA: Two earthquakes struck off the waters of towns in Eastern and Northern Samar early Monday (Sept 29) morning, the state seismologist said.

In its earthquake bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that a magnitude 4.4 quake occurred east of Mapanas town in Northern Samar at 3:13am.

The tremor was tectonic in nature and had a depth of 10km.

Phivolcs also reported that Instrumental Intensity I was felt in Mapanas town.

Meanwhile, a magnitude 4 earthquake struck east of San Julian town in Eastern Samar at 4:17am.

The tremor was also tectonic in origin and had a depth of 25km.

In an earlier bulletin, Phivolcs had raised the magnitude to 4.1, with a depth of 20km.

Phivolcs said no damage to property was reported, and aftershocks are expected from both earthquakes. - Philippine Daily inquirer/ANN
