Brunei reports 200 scam cases in 2024

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The top three incidents reported to Brunei Computer Emergency Response Team (BruCERT) in 2024 are 200 cases of scams, 76 cases of unsolicited calls or messages and 52 cases of impersonation.

Cyber Security Brunei cybersecurity awareness trainer Siti Nor Izuana Ayob (pic) in her presentation at the ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) Awareness Workshop for Senior Citizens’.

She said, “Last year, we received 646 reports of security incidents. In my opinion, there are still many incidents that went unreported.

“Some victims of scam didn’t report because they only lost a small amount of money, some expressed they were shy while children didn’t want to lodge a report on cyber bully because they were worried of getting scolded by their parents.”

Cyber Security Brunei (CSB) only started to receive complaints on artificial intelligence (AI) in the past three to two years. Therefore this has shown that AI has already entered in the daily life of the community.

Siti Nor Izuana urged the participants to not share personal information to AI as AI can share personal details among other users.

“I used to deliver talks to children on cyber-bullying focusing on social media only.

“However since the emergence of AI, I also include the topic of AI because there were several cases where a male student had used AI to create picture of another male student wearing a female dress.

“This picture went viral at the school. This is the growing concern on the misuse of AI. Despite many positive benefits from AI, some still misuse it.”

Siti Nor Izuana warned, “Anyone can be a victim when a picture or a video of yourself is posted online. Therefore if you encounter such an incident, it is important to inform family and friends about the fake video.”

She also cited that there are some flaws in pictures or videos created by AI.

She also highlighted that AI is continuously improving its capability.

Siti Nor Izuana also iterated that if a person receives a picture or video, it is important to verify the source. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
