At least 18 dead in South Korea after heavy rains and landslides

SEOUL: At least 18 people have died and another nine are missing after days of heavy rains and landslides in South Korea, news agency Yonhap reported on Monday (July 21), citing the government.

The agency cited the Interior Ministry as saying that, as of Sunday evening, ten of the confirmed deaths were in the southern county of Sancheong. The other deaths reportedly occurred in areas including the western city of Seosan and the northern county of Gapyeong.

More than 14,000 had evacuated their homes since the torrential rains started on Wednesday, Yonhap reported, adding that some 2,000 cases of flooded roads, soil loss and destroyed public facilities and more than 2,200 private property damage reports had been received.

Torrential rains have hit the nation since Wednesday, with Sancheong province receiving an accumulated 793.5 millimetres of rain as of 5 pm (0800 GMT) on Sunday, Yonhap reported. Nearby Hapcheon received 699 mm and Hadong got 621.5 mm. - dpa
