Bruneian police warn public of fake traffic fine scam website

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) said that a viral SMS message claiming recipients have outstanding traffic fines and directing them to make payments via a website allegedly linked to the Land Transport Department (JPD) is fake.

In a statement, the RBPF said the message is part of an online scam.

The Land Transport Department has also informed the public via its official social media channels that it has no connection to the website and that the messages are fraudulent.

Following the scam’s circulation, the Cyber Crime Investigation Division under the Criminal Investigation Department has launched an investigation and has informed the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI) to block access to the fake website.

The police clarified that the Traffic Control and Investigation Department does not use the Land Transport Department’s website for payment of compound fines.

Members of the public are reminded that legitimate traffic fine payments can be made at police counters using cash or credit/debit card, or online via the BIBD mobile application only.

The RBPF advises the public to remain vigilant, avoid responding to suspicious messages, and always verify the legitimacy of any payment requests or links received. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
