Philippine military official faces rape complaints filed by two junior officers

MANILA: A high-ranking military official has been slapped with rape complaints before a prosecutor’s office after being accused of sexual assault early this year by two junior officers serving as his office assistants, according to documents provided to INQUIRER.net.

The joint criminal complaint for rape through sexual assault and attempted rape through sexual assault was filed after an earlier military investigation found prima facie evidence that the official exhibited conduct unbecoming of an officer and conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline.

The alleged assault occurred on Jan 29, 2025, after the official and his assistants attended an event that lasted until early morning the following day, the complaint said.

The two junior officers then proceeded to the official’s residence. There, the official allegedly subjected the two junior officers to a series of inappropriate and coercive acts, culminating in the sexual assault, the complaint read.

On Jan 30, 2025, the junior officer filed a complaint with the military.

“The totality of Respondent’s actions violates moral, ethical, and professional standards of military officers. His conduct demonstrates a lack of respect for others and an abuse of authority, bringing dishonour to the military profession,” said a military report dated Feb 26, 2025.

The report has also led to the filing of a charge sheet with the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (OJAG).

While the OJAG is currently determining whether sufficient evidence exists to warrant a general court-martial, a complaint has been filed with the Prosecutor’s Office.

Under Republic Act 516, a general court-martial has the power to try any person subject to military law for any crime or offence considered a felony in a civilian court.

Meanwhile, the official has been relieved from his post and is currently under restricted custody. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
