BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Some 70 students from Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre participated in the Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council’s (BDAIDS Council) HIV awareness programme for Peers and Youths (HAPPY) on Saturday (May 17) as part of the school awareness initiatives.

HAPPY is a youth-led project that spreads HIV awareness, including knowledge on teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

It is an interactive programme that combines audio and visuals, as well as an interactive activity, to pass on the message to young people, including messages adapted to the local settings.

The session was led by Project Coordinator for HAPPY Siti Kailene Mohd Jazlan Kashfi and supported by volunteers from BDAIDSCouncil.

Siti Kailene emphasised the importance of understanding HIV, including how the virus spreads and how it can be prevented.

She provided valuable insights on how HIV transmission occurs, helping to dispel common myths and misconceptions that young people often encounter.

She also addressed the rising concerns of teenage pregnancy, explaining the physical, emotional, and social consequences it can have on young people’s lives.

The session also highlighted local statistics related to HIV in Brunei, underlining the need for greater awareness and education. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
