Munajat night in Brunei highlights link between faith, mental health

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) held its 181st Munajat night on Saturday, marking the 24th special edition dedicated to women with focus on spiritual healing through Quranic reflection.

The event featured a tazkirah (lecture) titled ‘Healing dengan Tadabbur Al-Quran’ by Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Usuluddin, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Dr Sarinah Yahya.

She emphasised the importance of correcting misconceptions that associate mental health struggles with a lack of religious observance.

“Struggling with mental health does not mean one is lacking in faith or worship,” Dr Hajah Sarinah said, adding that healing is a comprehensive process involving recovery and treatment, not just relaxation.

From a spiritual perspective, she highlighted that Tadabbur Al-Quran – reflecting deeply on the meanings and lessons of Al-Quran – can serve as a form of therapeutic healing alongside professional psychological care. Al-Quran verses, she said, offer spiritual strength, emotional solace and resilience during life’s trials. She said those facing mental and emotional challenges are “the chosen ones,” given an opportunity by Allah the Almighty to draw closer to Him and become part of the Khayra Ummah (the best of communities).

Senior Religious Officer at the Islamic Syiar Development Division Datin Umiyati binti Mohd Noor, guest of honour, led the recitations of Sayyidul Istighfar and Surah Al-Fatihah. This was followed by a collective recitation of Surah Al-Mulk by champion of Al-Quran Reading Competition for Adults for 1446 Hijrah Siti Ummi Syazana Marjuki.

Meanwhile, third place winner of Al-Quran Reading Competition for Adults for 1446 Hijrah Amal Nazirah Asmat led the Doa Munajat. Selawat was recited by Tilawah Al-Quran Youth Scheme (STAR) student Nur Sofiyya Khalisah Nuurmatin. Doa Peliharakan Sultan dan Negara Brunei Darussalam was read by national-level finalist Nur Rodaah Asmat.

The virtual and in-person gathering brought together members of mosque takmir (management) committees, congregants from mosques, suraus and religious halls nationwide, as well as participants from the STAR and MoRA staff with their families. - Borneo Bulletin
