CANBERRA: Australians began voting Saturday (May 3) in an election that opinion polls said favoured Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, putting him in a position to become the first leader to win consecutive ballots in more than two decades.

Some of Australia’s largest states kicked off voting at 8 a.m. local time, including New South Wales, Victoria and the northeastern state of Queensland. Voting booths will close across the country from 6 p.m. local time, with first results trickling in about an hour after that. The winner is likely to be known later Saturday night.
