Naked man attacks three cops and slashes another man


A 22-year-old man was arrested after allegedly slashing another man in Hougang Avenue 8 on Thursday.

While he was being arrested, he injured three police officers after attacking them with a wooden plank with nails.

The officers suffered minor injuries.

The police said they received calls for help around 1.10pm, and saw the man running around naked when they arrived at the scene.

He had allegedly attacked a 30-year-old man earlier.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said they received a call for assistance at 1.30pm at Block 681 Hougang Avenue 8.

The injured man was taken conscious to Sengkang General Hospital.

The suspect was arrested for voluntarily causing hurt by grievous means and for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing his duty.

A knife and a wooden plank with nails were seized.

Police investigations are ongoing.

When The Straits Times arrived outside Xinmin Primary School in Hougang Avenue 8 at 4.30pm, eight police officers and three police vehicles were at the scene.

There was also a car with a damaged windscreen, which The Straits Times understands was caused by the suspect.

The Straits Times also understands the suspect damaged a bus.

ITE student Perng Jia Fu, 16, who was one of its passengers, said: “The man used a wooden plank with nails to smash the bus’ windows while it was at the bus stop.”

June Chia, whose eight-year-old son studies at Xinmin Primary, said: “I found out about the incident after the man had been arrested.

“It’s quite scary, and I was worried about the children’s safety as the man could have run into the school.

“The students at the school were dismissed at 1.30pm, which was around the time of the incident, but thankfully my son had gone to student care at the time,” said Chia.

A woman who works in the area and wanted to be known only as Seah, 27, said: “We were told by the police earlier to keep our windows closed and locked as the suspect had fled at first.

“We were relieved to find out later that he had been arrested.”

A man who wanted to be known only as Tan, 64, said he was driving to Hougang Polyclinic when he witnessed the arrest of the suspect.

“I saw four police officers pin down the naked man on the road. The man was not even wearing underwear. I was shocked,” he said. — The Straits Times/ANN
