SINGAPORE: Two men, aged 30 and 58, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the fraudulent registration of prepaid SIM cards, after three mobile phone shops were raided by the police on March 5.
Eight others – seven men and a woman, aged between 27 and 50 – are also under probe, said the police in a statement on Thursday (March 20).
The shops that were raided are ARS Digital World at 182 Serangoon Road, Univercell Mobiles Technology at 256 Serangoon Road and Icares Mobile Services at 200 Woodlands Industrial Park.
The operation was carried out by officers from the Unlicensed Moneylending Strike Force under the Criminal Investigation Department.
Preliminary investigations showed that the suspects allegedly used information from actual customers to pre-register for additional prepaid SIM cards. An assortment of mobile phones, mobile registration documents and SIM cards were seized during the operation, the police added.
The 10 suspects are being investigated for illegally obtaining personal information, unauthorised modification of computer material and facilitating the fraudulent registration of SIM cards that facilitate criminal activity.
Each offence carries a fine of up to $10,000, a jail term of up to three years, or both.
